Tom Cleverley retires from Active Football.

Tom Cleverley, a Manchester United academy graduate representing Watford, announced his retirement from active Football. The maestro midfielder took this decision citing Achilles’ injury. However, the player has been dealing with this for over the years. In a statement, Tom said, “Unfortunately, my body has failed me and just hasn’t got the capacity to perform anymore.”

Playing for Watford, Cleverley has 181 appearances, with 19 goals and has made 15 assists in his six years stint. However, his last season of 22-23 was prone to injuries. Apart from Achilles, he also suffered a thigh injury in February. As a result, Tom could play just 29 games. Moreover, Cleverley returned on loan from Everton and made his stay permanent in 2017 at Watford.

Watford made his retirement official by posting a Tweet stating, “Some exciting news will soon be announced jointly by the club and Tom.”

However, Tom could not register a single goal to his name in his 13 international games for England. Besides this, he holds a record for the maximum number of touches in a match by an English player, with 165 touches.

A Thankyou Note to Manchester United

Tom made seventy-nine appearances for Manchester United in his early days in Football. During his stint with United, Cleverley has five goals under his belt.

Speaking of his retirement in a joint statement with Watford, Cleverley further added, “Special mentions must go to Manchester United… The people and the club that gave me the foundations as a player and person and also the club that made my dreams come true.”
