PCB Moves ODI Tri-Series Amid Champions Trophy Venue Preparations
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Wednesday that the upcoming ODI tri-series featuring South Africa and New Zealand will be relocated from Multan to Karachi and Lahore. This decision comes amid growing speculation about renovation delays at key venues for the Champions Trophy, which kicks off on February 19 in Karachi.
Despite reports of incomplete construction work, the PCB reassured that preparations for the prestigious tournament are on track. The board confirmed that ongoing upgrades at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, and National Bank Stadium, Karachi, will be completed by the stipulated deadlines.
Venue Relocation and PCB’s Confidence in Progress
“Given the advanced stage of preparations at the Gaddafi Stadium and the National Bank Stadium, the PCB has decided to relocate the upcoming tri-nation ODI series to these two venues,” the board stated.
The PCB emphasized its confidence in the readiness of these upgraded venues to provide a world-class experience for players, officials, and fans alike.
Concerns About Stadium Renovations
Reports and social media posts have circulated showing unfinished work at stadiums slated for the Champions Trophy, raising doubts about their readiness. A source quoted by the Times of India highlighted several challenges, including incomplete plaster work and ongoing construction for essential facilities.
“The weather isn’t conducive to rapid construction,” the source noted. “The finishing work, especially for dressing rooms, needs meticulous attention to meet ICC standards.”
Increased Spectator Capacity and Modern Facilities
Despite concerns, the PCB has made significant improvements, including increasing Gaddafi Stadium’s capacity to 35,000 and installing 480 state-of-the-art LED lights to enhance broadcasting quality.
The timely handover of venues to the ICC remains crucial, as any delay could jeopardize the tournament’s successful execution. With a tight deadline, both the PCB and ICC face the challenge of ensuring the venues are fully ready for the international cricket spectacle.
