IPL 2022 Auction Rules: All you need to know about the 2-day mega auction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction will be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13 and the focus of the entire cricket world shifts to the Garden City. 10 team, including the two new teams, will begin on an even heel as they look to build their core group after the retentions and the draft picks.

As many as 590 players, including 370 players from India, were shortlisted from a long list of over 1000 players who signed up for the IPL 2022 mega auction. In the first auction of this scale since 2018, teams will have a maximum purse of Rs 90 crore out of which all 10 franchises have used up money for retentions and draft picks.

British auctioneer Hugh Emandes will host the auction on Saturday and Sunday.

KL Rahul is the costliest player so far for IPL 2022 as he was picked in the draft by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 16 crore. Amongst 590 players who have registered for the auction, 228 are capped players, 355 are uncapped players and 7 belong to Associate Nations.

10 players, including R Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer, are part of the marquee list for IPL 2022 auction.

IPL 2022 Auction Rules

  • Each franchise should spend a minimum of Rs 67.5 crore from their purse of Rs 90 crore.
  • Each team should have a minimum of 18 players and a maximum of 25
  • The base price of players range from Rs 2 crore to Rs 20 lakh.
  • No Right To Match Cards available for teams to bring back their former players.

Rs 2 crore is the highest reserve price and as many as 48 players have chosen to place themselves in this bracket.

There are 20 players in the auction list with a reserve price of Rs 1.5 crore while 34 players are in the list of cricketers with a reserve price of Rs 1 crore.

  • 161 players will go under the hammer on Day 1 of the IPL 2022 Auction
  • Day 2 of the auction will have an accelerated process. Here franchises put up a common wish-list of players they want to be auctioned.
  • There is a tie-breaker at the auction

When two teams are tied and exhausted all their purse trying to bid for a player, they can submit a final closed bid amount and the one who’s bid more will get the player. The extra amount bid is to be deposited with BCCI and will not be part of INR 90 cr purse. The process can be repeated till a clear winner emerges.

Oldest player at auction: Imran Tahir of SA at 43 years

Youngest Player at Auction: Noor Ahmed of Afghanistan at 17 years
