Former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is set to make a triumphant return to Formula 1, this time at the helm of Audi’s ambitious F1 project. Audi announced on Tuesday that Binotto will assume the roles of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, effective August 1, 2024.

Binotto’s appointment comes as part of a major shake-up in Audi’s F1 project, which will see the departure of Sauber CEO Andreas Seidl and Audi executive Oliver Hoffmann. With his extensive experience of more than 25 years in Formula 1, Binotto is expected to play a decisive role in Audi’s preparations for its entry into the sport in 2026.

“Our aim is to bring the entire Formula 1 project up to F1 speed by means of clear management structures, defined responsibilities, reduced interfaces, and efficient decision-making processes,” said Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi AG. “With Mattia Binotto, we have been able to recruit a proven expert who will further enhance the professionalization of our racing activities.”

Binotto, a Swiss-born Italian, began his career in Formula 1 in 1995 with Ferrari, where he worked his way up through the ranks to become the team principal in 2019. He left Ferrari at the end of the 2022 season after failing to secure the constructors’ championship.
