However, the 39-year-old striker, who has been a pivotal figure in Indian football for the past 19 years, will play his final match against Kuwait in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on June 6, 2024, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

 

Chhetri, often referred to as the ‘Captain Fantastic’ of Indian football, has been a beacon of inspiration for aspiring footballers across the country. His illustrious, nearly two decades-long career has been marked by numerous accolades and records. He is currently the third-highest goalscorer among active footballers globally, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

In a video message shared on his social media platform, X, Chhetri expressed his gratitude and emotions. He said, “The feel that I recollect in the last 19 years is a very nice combination of duty, pressure, and immense joy,” he said. “I never thought individually these are the games I’ve played for the country, this is what I’ve done good, I’ve done bad. It’s not that I was feeling tired, not that I was feeling this or that. When the instinct came that this should be my last game, I thought about it a lot, eventually I came to this decision.

The news of Chhetri’s retirement has elicited an outpouring of tributes and well-wishes from fans, fellow athletes, and celebrities alike. Virat Kohli, former India cricket captain and a close friend of Chhetri, paid a heartfelt tribute to the football legend. Replying to the video message shared by the legend, Kohli wrote: “My brother. PROUD.” Both legends share a strong bond of friendship and take inspiration from one another’s performances in their respective fields.
